Timber flooring brings timeless warmth and character to a home, but its beauty is vulnerable to the inevitable: scratches. From pet claws and moving furniture to daily foot traffic, these marks can seem like a permanent flaw. However, with the right approach, you can effectively manage and often erase them, preserving your floor's elegance for years.
The key is to address scratches based on their depth. For light surface scratches that don't penetrate the sealant, start with a simple clean using a wood floor cleaner. Often, a mixture of equal parts vinegar and olive oil can help minimise the appearance of fine scuffs. Apply gently with a soft cloth in the direction of the grain.
For slightly deeper scratches that catch your fingernail, a dedicated wood repair marker or wax filler stick is your best tool. Choose a colour that matches your floor finish. Apply the product directly into the scratch, wipe away excess, and buff the area smooth. These fillers blend remarkably well, making minor blemishes virtually disappear.

Deep gouges that expose raw wood require more attention. For oiled floors, you can lightly sand the affected area with fine-grit paper, following the grain, then reapply matching oil. For lacquered floors, a small amount of clear wood floor repair lacquer can seal the scratch. In all cases, test any product in an inconspicuous area first.
Prevention is the ultimate cure. Use felt pads under furniture legs, keep pet nails trimmed, and place mats at entrances. Regular sweeping with a soft broom prevents abrasive grit from causing new scratches.
Remember, a few scratches add to a floor's lived-in charm. But by tackling them promptly and with care, you ensure your timber flooring remains a stunning and durable centrepiece in your home.
