Oak, a standout among various solid woods, is an ideal choice for furniture, flooring, and interior moldings due to its superior texture and beautiful grain. Imported oak is mainly divided into two categories: white oak and red oak, commonly referred to as white oak and red oak.
Red oak is primarily produced in North America and Europe, while white oak mainly grows in Asia, Europe, and North America. The wood structure of these two types of oak is quite similar to that of the Quercus acutissima and Quercus spp. found in China.
There is a noticeable difference between the sapwood and heartwood of oak. The sapwood is typically grayish-yellowish-white, while the heartwood varies in color, ranging from yellowish-brown with a reddish tinge to reddish-brown. Its grain is usually straight, occasionally diagonal, and its relatively coarse texture creates a beautiful grain pattern.
As a high-quality wood, oak not only possesses high mechanical strength but also exhibits excellent wear resistance. However, it also has some characteristics to be aware of, such as a tendency to crack and warp when drying, and it can be relatively difficult to saw and cut. Nevertheless, oak has relatively good drilling properties and easily produces a smooth planed surface. Furthermore, it has strong screw-holding power and exhibits good painting and staining properties.
It is mainly used in the manufacture of wooden doors and windows, flooring, high-end decoration, and high-end furniture. While white oak shares many similarities with red oak in its wood uses, white oak possesses unique application value. It is not only hard and resilient but also has excellent bending strength, making it resistant to damage when bent under stress. In addition, its pores are rich in tyloses, which not only enhances its resistance to decay but also strengthens its impermeability. Particularly noteworthy is that wine barrels made from white oak are both leak-proof and breathable, thus being considered a superior choice for making wine barrels (red oak is not suitable for this purpose).
