A Complete Guide for Homeowners

Underfloor heating (UFH) is becoming more popular every year. It's comfortable, energy‑efficient, and invisible. But many people ask: can I install real wood flooring over it?

The short answer: Yes – if you choose the right type of wood flooring and the right installation method.

1. Solid hardwood vs. engineered wood – a critical difference

· Solid hardwood (one piece of wood) expands and contracts significantly with heat and humidity. Over underfloor heating, it tends to cup, gap, or crack. We do not recommend solid wood over UFH.

· Engineered wood flooring (a top layer of real wood on multiple plywood or cross‑ply layers) is dimensionally much more stable. The cross‑grained construction resists movement, making it perfectly suitable for underfloor heating.

✅ Choose multi‑layer engineered wood with a total thickness of 10–15mm for best performance.

2. Installation method matters even more

The second key factor is how the floor is installed. The two most common methods:

Method Performance over UFH

Floating (click system) Acceptable, but the air gap reduces heat transfer. Some click locks may loosen after repeated heating/cooling cycles.

Full‑spread glue down Best choice – the adhesive layer is thin and thermally conductive, allowing fast heat transfer. It also locks the floor tightly, preventing movement.

3. Use the right adhesive – 4th generation SMP glue

If you choose glue down, not all adhesives are equal. Old asphalt‑based or solvent‑based glues are not suitable and are also harmful.

For underfloor heating, you need a 4th‑generation SMP adhesive (silane‑terminated polyether). Why?

· Zero isocyanate – No harmful emissions, even when heated.

· Ultra‑low VOC – Safe for bedrooms and living areas.

· High elasticity & low modulus – Absorbs the wood's thermal expansion and contraction without cracking or debonding.

· Certified – Look for German Blue Angel or French A+ labels.

These high‑performance adhesives are sometimes called "liquid underlayments" .

4. Quick checklist for a safe, long‑lasting UFH wood floor

✅ Engineered wood flooring (not solid hardwood)

✅ Maximum board width ≤ 180mm (7 inches) – wider boards risk more movement

✅ 4th‑gen SMP adhesive with zero isocyanate and low modulus

✅ Full‑spread glue down installation (no gaps)

✅ Follow the flooring and adhesive manufacturer's UFH guidelines (maximum surface temperature usually 27–28°C / 80–82°F)

Final word

Yes, wood flooring can be used with underfloor heating – but only engineered wood installed with full‑spread 4th‑gen SMP glue. When done correctly, you get the warmth of natural wood plus the comfort of radiant heat.
